Access & Facilities
All of the materials in the archive are open to researchers. Many of the holdings have already been released in published form.
The reading room has various equipment for listening to sound recordings.
Copies of sound recordings are available for purchase on magnetic tape, according to established prices and upon written request and letter of guarantee by the ordering organization or institution. Foreigners are required to pay in rubles at a dollar equivalent. A license agreement is required for copies intended for commercial use.
The archive has traditional information retrieval systems in card catalogues: a systematic catalogue, card catalogues by names of authors and performers, a systematic union catalogue of sound recordings preserved in state archives of the former USSR (archives of union republics, krais, oblasts, and cities), and opisi (accession and descriptive registers) of sound recordings in the archive. Starting in 1989, a computerized information retrieval system has been started covering socio-political and artistic recordings.
