Rossiiskii gosudarstvennyi arkhiv drevnikh aktov (RGADA)

Access & Facilities

All of the archival holdings are open to researchers.

Working conditions
There is a large reading room for work with original documents, but readers are required to use microfilms for many older and unique documents in a special microform reading room. Orders for documents normally take three days for Moscovites and two day for others (limited to 10 files per day).
For more details see British guide: Russian & Ukrainian Archives Guide available electronically: http://www.ceelbas.ac.uk/archives-gui....

Copy facilities
Microfilm, xerox, and photographic copies. Normally xerox is not permitted from bound manuscripts. Numbers of copies may be limited by technical resources. A license agreement must be made when copies are intended for commercial publication.

Reference facilities
The annotated register (reestr opisei) available electronically on the website of the archive: http://rgada.info/poisk/index.php?fun....
Copies of most of the opisi are shelved in the main reading room. Opisi for many fonds were prepared in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, some of which are more detailed than more contemporary ones. All of the opisi are listed in a five-volume typescript register (reestr opisei) with indication of published variants, in a tabular form according to fond numbers (see b–68). Some separate groups of fonds have card and sheet indexes, including an index for church institutions, and indexes of sections of institutional records included within some complex fonds (the Armory Archive, the State Senate, and others).

Library facilities
The large RGADA library with rich prerevolutionary holdings includes incunabula and early printed books, with many examples of early Cyrillic printing (15th–17th c.), as well as scholarly literature on Russian history and philology and folklore (210,000 books and brochures). The library was established on the basis of libraries of predecessor archives of RGADA, notably a large part of the former MGAMID and MAMIu libraries, as well as the library of the Moscow Synodal Press. Watermark albums and additional reference books for ancillary historical disciplines can be checked out to the archival reading room.
