The viewing of electronic images of documents posted on the website is available on a fee basis only for registered users. The archive holds documentary audiovisual materials from different institutions and organizations of the city of St. Petersburg and Leningrad Oblast, as well as those received from state and political leaders, public figures, artists, scientists, and scholars. The life of prerevolutionary Russia is represented by photographs of plants and factories, banks, stock exchanges, insurance societies, and shops. A number of photographs depict the construction and operation of railways, ports and canals, and public transportation, and the economic development of the capital. Materials of the archive characterize the daily life of various social layers of the population–the gentry, bourgeoisie, the clergy, civil servants, scientists, artists, workers, and peasants. There are many photographs of members of the imperial family and well-known political and social figures, including S.Iu. Witte (Vitte), I.P. Pavlov, L.N. Andreev, L.N. Tolstoi, A.M. Gor'kii, A.A. Blok, I.E. Repin, N.A. Rimskii-Korsakov, P.I. Tchaikovsky (Chaikovskii), and F.I. Chaliapin (Shaliapin), among others. There are many views of the activities of the scientific, cultural, educational, and philanthropic societies and organizations, including city hospitals and asylums. Political history is represented by photographs about the events of the Revolutions of 1905–1907 and 1917, which were shot by such famous photographers as V.K. Bulla, P.S. Zhukov, and Ia.V. Shteinberg. There are also photographs depicting hostilities of the Civil War and World War II. Activities of government institutions are reflected in photographs of meetings, such as those of guberniia, oblast, and okrug congresses of soviets, and of plenums and sessions of guberniia, oblast, city, and raion executive committees. Many photographic materials depict the economic life of St. Petersburg–the construction industry, trade, commerce, and transportation; medical services, education, cultural and scientific life; and sporting events. There are materials about international contacts of the city, the reception of the foreign visitors, and participation of citizens of Leningrad in international exhibitions, congresses, and conferences. Sound recordings preserve music productions (symphonic, opera, light opera, and folk music) of various studios. N.B.
