        The archive holds records of institutions of Moscow Guberniia and subsequently Moscow Oblast from the time of its formation in 1922. Records of the oblast for the period before 1922 and city institutions after 1922 are held in appropriate city archives, although there are also records from a few continuing agencies after 1917 in TsGAMO.
        The earliest organs of Soviet rule in the territory of Moscow Oblast are represented by the records of the Moscow Soviet of Workers', Peasants', and Red Army Deputies (Mossovet), Moscow Guberniia Soviet of Workers', Peasants', and Red Army Deputies (Mosgubsovet), Moscow City and Oblast Soviet of People's Commissars, and executive committees (ispolkom) of uezd and volost soviets, dating from 1917 to 1920. In addition, there are fonds of revolutionary agencies: the Moscow Guberniia Revolutionary Tribunal, along with those of guberniia and uezd military-revolutionary committees.
        Records of contemporary agencies of state government and administration are represented by the fonds of the Moscow Oblast Soviet (Mosoblsovet), Moscow Oblast Administration and its committees, institutions of courts and prosecutors, such as the Moscow Oblast Bar and Moscow Oblast Court.
        The economic development of the region is documented in the fonds of the Moscow Council of the National Economy (MSNKh), the Moscow guberniia and oblast Councils of People's Commissars, and various planning and financial institutions, such as the Moscow Guberniia Planning Commission, the Main Financial Administration of Moscow Oblast, the State Tax Inspectorate of Moscow Oblast, and others. TsGAMO also preserves fonds of contemporary large-scale industrial institutions, plants, and factories, such as the Kolomna Factory (Kolomenskii zavod) and the Electrotiazhmash Industrial Associations, the Dmitrov Milling-Machine Plant, and the Podol'sk Machine-Building Plant. There are also records of traditional local creative factories of the Moscow region–the Bogorodskoe Factory of Artistic Carving, the Zhostovo Factory of Decorative Designs, the Dulevo Porcelain Factory, and the Fedoskino Factory for Miniature Designs, and the Pavlovskii Posad Worsted Mill.
        Economic and social relations in the postrevolutionary period are reflected in records of the Commissariat of Lands of Moscow Oblast, the Land Division of Mossovet, uezd land committees, and collective (kolkhoz) and state (sovkhoz) farms.
        TsGAMO holds records reflecting the cultural development of the city and guberniia (Oblast) of Moscow. Most extensive are the records of the Moscow Oblast Commissariat of Public Education, uezd and raion divisions of public education, the Moscow City Administration of Public Education, the Mossovet Commission for Improving Living Conditions of Scientists, the Moscow Guberniia Commission for Aid to Children, the Commission for the Protection of the Trinity-St. Sergius Monastery (Troitse-Sergieva Lavra), Moscow Oblast theaters, philharmonic societies, and unions of artists and journalists.
        TsGAMO accessions, registers, and preserves personal papers of prominent revolutionaries, Communist Party, state, and economic leaders, scientists, and men of letters and art, who were either born or worked in Moscow Oblast. Among these are documents of participants of the October Revolution such as Ia.Ia. Grunt and I.M. Liubovtsev, directors of oblast administration such as P.G. Burylichev, P.S. Tarasov, I.S. Khokhlov, N.M. Vasil'ev, A.N. Tsivileva, and directors of oblast institutions of higher education such as F.I. Korovin, G.V. Storozhenko, among others.
        The archive also has several special collections, including letters of participants in World War II, as well as records of military units liberating the town of Klin during the war.
        Scientific and technical documentation is represented by plans of Moscow Oblast towns and villages, historical parts of towns, and designs of various construction projects. There are also records of the Central Machine-Testing Station (Tsentral'naia mashinoispytatel'naia stantsiia—TsMIS), the Mytishchi Plant of Decorative Moulding, and the Research Institute of Lacquer Coating, among others.
        Photograph collections include pictures of historical and cultural monuments in Moscow Oblast (Kolomenskoe, Ostankino, and Abramtsevo), and depictions of the evolution of Moscow Oblast towns, villages, and collective and state farms. There are also photographs of Heroes of Socialist Labor, front-rank workers, and other prominent people of Moscow Oblast.
