History
The Institute was founded in 1947 on the basis of the Biogeochemical Laboratory (founded in 1928), which was renamed the V.I. Vernadskii Laboratory of Geochemical Problems in 1943.
        The V.I. Vernadskii Memorial Cabinet-Museum (established in 1946) opened in 1953 to celebrate the ninetieth birthday of the world renowned geologist and biogeochemist Vladimir Ivanovich Vernadskii (1863–1945), who before the revolution was a professor at Moscow University, first president of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukraine (1918), and later headed the Biogeochemical Laboratory, which he founded and directed until his death in 1945.
        The A.P. Vinogradov Memorial Cabinet-Museum was opened to the public in 1984 (founded in 1975) in honor of the geochemist Aleksandr Pavlovich Vinogradov (1895–1975), who founded and directed the Institute (1947–1975) and served as vice-president of the Academy of Sciences (1967–1975).
