The museum was established in 1987 as Central Museum of Medicine. In addition to other exhibits, the museum holds unique materials for the history of medicine, including documentary and audiovisual fonds with documentation relating to various medical specialities from surgery to space medicine, as well as materials pertaining to the history of RAMN. The museum also collects materials relating to medical museum affairs and medical charities and philanthropy. In this latter connection, the museum retains all of the documentation from the Sheremetev Alms House (Strannopriimnyi dom Sheremeteva), which had occupied the palace before the Revolution. Some of the public museum exhibits portray this historical function (now also displayed in a separate museum website), while significant documentation is available for research purposes.
There are rare photographs and portraits of important figures in Russian medical history, many with autographs. There are motion pictures of medical lectures and experiments. Graphic materials include a unique collection of medical posters (1920s–present). The collection of rare medical literature includes holdings from the personal libraries of the physicians and surgeons V.V. Parin, E.M. Tareev, and S.S. Iudin, among others.
