[Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR]
History
The Academy was established in 1944 as the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR under the Ministry of Health of the USSR. It was reestablished as a self-governing state-sponsored organization and renamed the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences in 1992.
The Medical Museum was organized in 1986 as the Central Museum of Medicine, and in 1991 it received the status of a Scientific Research Center of the Academy. It is now housed in the palace of N.P. Rumiantsev (late 18th–early 19th c.), which after World War I had briefly housed a predecessor museum founded by the surgeon S.S. Iudin. Before the Revolution, part of the elegant building on Sukharev Square long served as the Sheremetev Hospital and Alms House (Strannopriimnyi dom grafa N.P. Sheremeteva). Today the same building houses the RAMN museum, which took over the documentation of the Sheremetev medical charities and features popular exhibits about those operations. The museum extends its coverage to all aspects of the history of medicine, associated with the research center.
