History
One of the most important centers for atomic research in the former Soviet Union was established in 1943 as Laboratory No. 2 of the Academy of Sciences. In 1955 it was renamed the Institute of Atomic Energy and transferred to the State Committee for the Utilization of Atomic Energy, although it was administratively under the Ministry for Medium Machine Building (Minsredmash), and also remained associated with the Academy of Sciences. In 1960 it was named in honor of its founder and first director Igor' Vasil'evich Kurchatov (1903–1960). It was reorganized and given its present name in 1991, and is now independent of the Academy of Sciences and government ministries, reportable directly to the Government of the Russian Federation.
The I.V. Kurchatov Memorial House-Museum was founded in 1970 on the grounds of the Institute of Atomic Energy. The museum is located in the house where the Soviet Russian nuclear physicist Igor Vasil'evich Kurchatov (1903–1960) lived.
