Library facilities
The RGPU Fundamental Scientific Library (Fundamental'naia nauchnaia biblioteka) (ca. 2,500,000 vols.) was founded in 1887 on the basis of book collections of the higher educational establishments and research institutions that formed part of the Pedagogical Institute, and also from the private libraries of P.I. Keppen (Köppen), M.D. Priselkov, D.M. Petrushevskii, and E.D. Grimm. In 2002 it was named in honor of its first patron Empress Mariia Fedorovna (1759–1828), wife of the Russian Emperor Pavel I (1754–1801). The library contains literature on all branches of knowledge together with manuscript dissertations defended at the University from 1956 onwards.
The library has a number of eighteenth-century copies of Russian manuscript books, including the legal codex (Ulozhenie) of Aleksei Mikhailovich, the Genealogy of the Great Lords of Moscow, the Founding of Novgorod the Great, the Nomocanon (Kormchaia) of 1787, a “Lives of the Fathers” (Paterik), and the “Life of Peter I” (1743). There are card catalogues on local history, teaching theory and practice, and of publications relating to A.I. Gertsen (Alexander Hertsen).
        The library is open for research M–F 10:00–18:00 (tel.: +7 812 571-46-62; e-mail: [email protected]; website: http://lib.herzen.spb.ru/; http://www.herzen.spb.ru/main/structu...).
