Access & Facilities

Access
For access to archival materials an official letter is required, which should be addressed to the director of the Institute, and which must be approved by the Scientific Council and the Head of the Manuscript Division.
        The Division of Manuscripts and Artistic Illustrations, as of late 1998, is officially open only to members of IMLI, as a consequence of the ongoing thorough inventory control and reorganization. There are some exceptions, so it is advisable to make prior arrangements with the head of the division and the IMLI director.

Copy facilities
Photographic and xerox copies can be prepared on approval of the IMLI Scientific Council and/or the director.

Reference facilities
There are opisi, card catalogues for negative and photographic collections, and auxiliary specialized card catalogues and inventories.

Library facilities
The Institute library has approximately 600,000 volumes, including unique copies of Russian and foreign literature, some from the personal collections of well-known scholars such as S.A. Sobolevskii, A.I. Malein, and B.L. Modzalevskii. A large part of the library consists of first editions and autographed copies of well-known Russian writers, such as Lomonosov, Kantemir, Karamzin, Pushkin, Lermontov, Gogol', Turgenev, Dostoevskii, Fet, Tiutchev, and Blok, as well as foreign writers.
        There is also a collection of rare books, such as the first edition of the Apostol (Vil'no, 1591), and also books confiscated by imperial censors or prohibited from print on other pretexts.
