Holdings

Total: ca. 52,000 units; 16th–20th cc.

The division holds a number of manuscript books dating from sixteenth through nineteenth centuries, especially on linguistics and jurisprudence in German and Latin. There is also a rich collection of early printed books, many of which were brought from Germany and other European countries after the Second World War.
        There are a number of personal archives on deposit here, including the personal papers of the library founder M.I. Rudomino (except for part of the archive that remains in family custody). The division also holds the personal papers of V.V. Ivasheva, a literary specialist on the staff of the library, whose correspondence includes letters from such British writers as William Golding, John Le Carré (pseud. of David Cornwall), and C.P. Snow. There are also autographs of A.A. Fet (Shenshin), K.D. Bal'mont, A.A. Blok, and a number of foreign cultural luminaries from the eighteenth to the twentieth centuries. The division holds the personal archive of Father Aleksandr Men' (some of his documents and his conversation and lecture notes are to be found in the People’ s Archive [Narodnyi arkhiv]).
        A collection entitled “Resistance” (Soprotivlenie), which was donated to the library in 1962 by the French Communist Georges Roman contains documents relating to the Second World War, such as leaflets, posters, and photographs, and forms the basis of the library’ s special Cabinet-Museum of French Anti-Fascist Resistance Literature (Kabinet-muzei literatury frantsuzskogo antifashistskogo soprotivleniia).
