atlases, maps and plans—41,523 units; globes—18 units

This division contains manuscript and printed maps of both Russian and foreign origin and includes atlases, globes, and plans done on various media (such as paper and silk), and using different techniques. Many of these were acquired as part of private collections (P.Ia. Dashkov, I.E. Zabelin, and A.P. Bakhrushin) or from institutions such as the Military History Museum. The collection includes eighteenth century Russian manuscript maps; and cartographic materials from the General Land Survey of Russia, such as the manuscript “Atlas of Tver Namestnichestvo” (1783–1793).
Of particular interest from the postrevolutionary period are cartographic sources from the first years of Soviet rule, showing environmental and social phenomena, including historical, administrative, and demographic maps, as well aseconomic, scientific, and cultural maps.
The division also has maps of seas and rivers, and maps and globes of the heavens.
