The Division of Scientific Reference Service, while first organized as an auxiliary unit, now has brought together significant archival materials acquired by the museum during the 1990s, most of which have not been fully processed. There are three important collections of note.
One collection of documents relates to war heroes who were awarded the honor of “Hero of the Soviet Union,” collected by Vladimir Nikolaevich Kirpichnikov in 1953. It includes newspaper clippings, correspondence of Kirpichnikov with those who received the awards, copies of their certificates of award, and other documentation. A collection entitled “Children of the War,”brought together by the journalist Sof'iia Urlanis, already numbers between 8,000 and 9,000 units, including newspaper clippings, photographs, and copies of documents. The museum also holds part of the collection of the Council of Veterans (Sovet veteranov), including someof the administrative documentation of the Council itself, along with over 500 photograph albums regarding the burial of those who perished during the war.
The personal papers of the composer and musicologist Viktor Evgen'evich Biriukov (ca. 1,500 units) include documentary materials he gathered for his television series in the 1980s entitled “Songs of the Great Patriotic War.”

Reference facilities:
The division has a card catalogue for the “Heroes of the Soviet Union” collection. A computer reference system is being planned for the division holdings.
