Access & Facilities
Access by researchers to archival holdings in all divisions and the museum library requires an official letter from the researcher’s sponsoring Russian institution to the director or deputy director for scientific work, stating the subject and the purpose of research.
Researchers are accommodated in the various division offices as required, as there is no formal reading room in the museum. Materials are normally delivered immediately after they are ordered.
Copying facilities are limited, but photographic and xerox copies can be made as well as colored slides with the permission of the museum administration. Photographic prints from negatives in the Photograph Sector can be ordered through the museum photographic laboratory.
The Scientific Library of the museum (135,000 volumes) contains literature on Russian art and includes the libraries of the Committee for Popularization of Art Publications (Komitet populiarizatsii khudozhestvennykh izdanii), the Trustees’ Committee for Russian Iconography (Komitet popechitel'stva o russkoi ikonopisi), and the Baron Stieglitz School of Industrial Art (Uchilishche tekhnicheskogo risovaniia barona Shtiglitsa), as well as the private library collections of A.N. Benois (Benua), V.V. Lebedev, A.S. Suvorin, and many others. There are card catalogues for literature about the museum, exhibition catalogues, the private library of Alexandre Benois (A.N. Benua), “Rossica,” for personalia (names of artists, sculptors, and architects), and for publications prepared by the museum staff.
