The museum archive contains organizational and administrative documentation of the museum since 1918, including personnel files (from the 1920s), inventories of acquisitions, the records of the Academic Secretary and the Academic Council of the museum, reports on research trips undertaken by the staff, and correspondence with museums and academic organizations abroad. There are also unpublished manuscripts of scholarly works by a number of famous Orientalists, such as B.P. Denike and O.N. Glukhareva.
Photographic documents include early daguerrotypes of museum exhibits, albums with photographs of the first exhibitions, and displays from the N.A. Narimanov Cabinet of the History of the Revolutionary and National Liberation Movement in the East (Kabinet istorii revoliutsionnogo i natsional'no-osvoboditel'nogo dvizheniia na Vostoke im. N.N. Narimanova), exhibited between 1925 and 1932.
The archive also has a slide file and a fond of posters, booklets, and invitations.

N.B. A large part of the museum documentation has been lost since the war as the result of several disasters, and particularly the 1976 fire. The archive is still largely unarranged. Part of the records for the years 1918–1930 remain under the control of the Registration and Acquisitions Department (Otdel ucheta i komplektovaniia) (ul. Vorontsovo pole, 16).
