This index gives information about the more than 3,000 archives and collections that are kept at the IISH. Every entry in the index is linked to a brief description of the relevant collection. Descriptions of Dutch archives are in Dutch, the other ones are in English. Over 1000 lists and inventories of archival collections are currently available on-line.

Consultation

If you wish to consult a collection, please read our rules first. Donors and owners of material on loan to the Institute may, however, impose certain restrictions about accessing, copying, and publishing these collections or parts of collections, including a requirement for expressly requesting permission of the donor or owner. Restricted access to archives may also be necessary to protect the privacy of individuals or because of the physical condition of the material in question.
To find out if access to a collection is limited, see the brief descriptions of the relevant archives.

Request for permission

For permission to consult a collection with limited access, please submit a written request in advance stating the nature of your study. This may be done by completing the form Restricted Access Archives. For more information please contact the Reading Room: .

Temporarily unavailable

Some archives may be temporarily not available for consultation, this can occur if records are is being reinventorised, receiving conservation treatment or being copied to film or microfiche.
The following archives are not or limited available for consultation:
• Ferdinand Domela Nieuwenhuis - until February 2010
• Michail Bakunin - not available until May 2010 (cd-rom Archives Bakounine is available)
• Owenite Societies - not available from January up and until May 2010
• Kiesvereniging Burgerplicht Amsterdam - not available from January up and until May 2010
• Centrale Arbeiders-, Verzekerings- en Depositobank - inventory numbers 1547-1603 not available until May 2010
• Eduard Bernstein (only available on microfilm) - not available from November 2009 until May 2010
