Biography
Friedrich Adler: born in Vienna 1879, died in Zurich, Switzerland 1960; physicist, internationalist, social democrat; secretary of the Sozialdemokratische Arbeiterpartei in Österreich (SDAP) 1911-1914 and 1918-1923; became a symbol of the antiwar wing in the labour movement when he shot the Austrian Prime Minister Karl Strügkh in 1916; under the influence of the revolutionary public opinion in Austria after the Russian revolution, he was released from prison in 1918; became chairman of the Arbeiter- und Soldatenrat; founder of the International Working Union of Socialist Parties (IWUSP) in 1921; secretary of the Labour and Socialist International (LSI/SAI) 1923-1946; after the `Anschluss' with Germany, leader of the Auslandsvertretung der oesterreichischen Sozialisten (AVOES) founded in Paris in 1938; fled to the USA in 1940; founder and chairman of the Austrian Labor Committee (ALC) in New York in 1942; opposed the restoration of an independent Austria in 1945 and lived until his death in Zurich.
