Biography
Bauer, Otto; born in Vienna 1881, died in Paris 1938; politician, writer, leading member and theorist of the Sozialdemokratische Arbeiterpartei in Österreich (SDAP); editor of Der Kampf and coeditor of the Arbeiter-Zeitung from 1907; secretary of the Austrian Sozialdemokratische Reichsratfraktion 1907-1914; prisoner of war in Siberian camps 1914-1917; Minister of Foreign Affairs 1918-1919 and member of the Nationalrat 1920-1934; member of the Bureau and Executive of the Labour and Socialist International (LSI/SAI) from 1923; founder of the Auslandsbüro Österreichischer Sozialdemokraten (ALÖS) in Brno, Czechoslovakia 1934-1938.

Part of his papers, mainly concerning the illegal work of the Austrian social democrats and the resistance to fascism: correspondence (1924) 1934-1938, mainly letters received by Bauer from Friedrich Adler, Julius Braunthal, Fedor Dan, Karl Frank, Hubert (alias Joseph Buttinger), Paul Hertz, Otto and Käthe Leichter and others; manuscripts and drafts of books and articles 1935-1938, including `Die illegale Partei' 1938, a book on the world economy c.1935, `Die Internationale und der Krieg' c.1935; drafts of articles of, and some notes on articles by other authors; some reports on the activities of the illegal movement in Austria 1934-1938; minutes of talks and meetings held by Bauer with various persons and organizations 1934-1938; minutes of the Trade Union Conferences in Bratislava and Prague 1936; press clippings.
