INTRODUCTION

Bruno Oscar (Bruno Borisovič) Becker was born in 1885 in St. Petersburg (Russia).

He was the son of Benno Becker, businessman and Sophie Blumenthal, German-Russians of Lutheran background. He was married to Katharina Arens (1880–1962). They had one daughter. He was historian and slavist. In 1913 he came to the Netherlands with a scholarship from the Russian government for research on Dirck Volckertsz. Coornhert (1522-1590). He went back to Russia in 1915. In 1920 he became history professor in Petrograd.

Due to the difficult living conditions he left Russia and in 1922 he took up residence in Amsterdam with his family. In 1930 he was appointed associate professor in the Eastern European cultural history at the Universiteit van Amsterdam. Becker's social commitment in the thirties led to his membership of the Comité van Waakzaamheid of anti-national socialist intellectuals and of the Commissie Hulp aan Spanje during the Spanish Civil War.

In 1945 his chair was converted in a common professorship in Russian history and literature. In 1948 he became director of the Rusland-Instituut. In 1955 he was given emeritus status. From then on he could dedicate himself again to the studies of the 16 century humanists.

He died in 1968 in Amsterdam.

His papers were received by the IISH in 2002. They contain correspondence, manuscripts and typescripts, college notes, lectures, notes on Russian literature and cultural history, clippings and other documentation.
