Biography

Jean Pierre Beluze; born in Montmagny 1821, died in Meudon 1908; carpenter; French cooperator and follower of Cabet; when Cabet departed for America to found his Icarian colony, Beluze became director of the Icarian Bureau of Paris and managed for twelve years the collection of subscriptions for the colony; subsequently he reached the conclusion that communism could not be realized, and advanced instead a programme of cooperation for workers; he wrote Les Associations. Conséquences du progrès. Crédit au travail which contains a theoretical section on the advantages of workingmen’s associations and a practical section giving detailed provisions for a people’s bank; founded in 1863, the Société du Crédit au Travail of which he was appointed manager; it supported conservative capitalists like Casimir-Périer and Augustine Cochin, young republicans like Clemenceau and revolutionists like Michail Bakunin.

NB. Gustave Coutouly followed classical studies in Stuttgart and later in Pau, where Eugène Devéria stimulated him to follow courses in art at the workshop of Picot at the Fine Arts School in Paris. Later he became a Franch diplomat who was among others plenipotentiary minister in Bucarest in the years 1885-1894.

J. DUVAL . Collection of 20 handwritten letters, dated between March 23, 1863 and April 14, 1869, mostly on stationary of the journal L'Economiste français, founded and directed by Duval and mainly to J.P. Beluze, follower of Cabet, later director of 'Crédit au travail'. 18 letters are 8vo or small 8vo, 2 are 4to leaves, in total 26 pages.   1863-1869.  1 folder.
NB. Duval was born in Rodez on april 30, 1813. Full of Fourierist ideas he went to Algeria, where he founded the 'Union agricole d'Afrique' and in 1847 the 'Union de Sig' an phalasterian enterprise. When this adventure failed, he devoted himself to journalism, became chief editor of L' Echo d'Oran, and correspondent of the Journal des Débats and of the Revue des deux mondes. After his return to Paris he started L' Economiste français in 1862. He died in a train accident in 1870.

Maurice La Chatre was an adherant of Saint-Simon and later of Fourier. He tranformed his castle into a phalanstère which also had a functioning 'banque communale de crédit mutuel'. He wrote several books some of which got him into trouble and prison. He founded a bookshop and was also a publisher: he in fact was the first French publisher of Das Kapital.

NB. Henri-Charles Leneveux (b. 1817), was typesetter at Didot and partner of Martin Bernard who introduced him into politics. In 1840 he became president of the Société typographique and founder of the workers journal L'Atelier. The Bibliothèque utile was a low priced encyclopaedia, devoted to vulgarisation of the most useful knowledge for common people. Esteemed authors contributed to these series.

NB. Alfred Louis Darimon (Lille 1819 - Paris 1902), republican journalist and politician, was secretary to Proudhon and one of his friends. He was one of the collaborators to the journals Le Peuple and La voix du Peuple. He was secretary to the Corps Législatif (2 letters are on stationary of this body). All letters are addressed to 'Monsieur' or 'Mon cher Monsieur' but since Jean-Piere Beluze was the editor of the Crédit au Travail it seems likely that these letters were addressed to Beluze. A number of letters contain the remark, in another hand, 'Recu le (follows date)' and 'Repondu (follows date)' or only 'Recu (follows date)'
Added: 2 drafts of letters, not finished and not yet signed, and a copy of a text concerning the Crédit au Travail.

NB. Pierre-Eugène Flotard (1821-1910) played an important role in the Lyonese press. In 1864 he succeded Auguste Vermorel as columnist in Le Progrès de Lyon. He contributed also to the journals Le Temps and L'Avenir national. This collection contains:
