History

Born in Vienna 1885, died in Auschwitz 1942; social democratic politician and publicist; secretary of the Internationale Verbindung Sozialistischer Jugendorganisationen; executive member of the Sozialdemokratische Arbeiterpartei in Österreich (SDAP); supporter of the left wing of the Second International and, after the outbreak of the First World War, together with his friend Friedrich Adler, of the Zimmerwald Movement; city councillor of Vienna 1918-1934; president of the Vienna Landtag in 1922; member of the Nationalrat of Austria 1919-1934; editor of Die Bildungsarbeit from 1909; contributed also to the Volkstribüne and Der Kampf; wrote various pamphlets, including `Das sozialdemokratische Programm'; remained in the centre of the illegal SDAP from 1934; one of the first victims of the GESTAPO in 1938.
