Born in Berlin, Germany 1929, died Luxembourg 2005; professor of economics; left Germany with his parents to escape the Nazi regime and eventually arrived in the USA in 1941; educated at the Universities of Michigan and Chicago; completed his dissertation on Soviet Agriculture in 1957; from 1957 assistant professor at the Universities of Michigan State, Iowa and Wayne State; from 1963 visiting professor at the University of Brasilia in Brazil; after a lectureship at the National Autonomous University of Mexico he was appointed by the University of Chile in Santiago in 1968; left Chile after the military took over in 1973 and worked at several European universities, eventually at the University of Amsterdam, from which he retired in 1994; his publications include 'Capitalism and Underdevelopment in Latin America: Historical Studies of Chile and Brazil' 1967, 'Development of Underdevelopment: Essays on Imperialism, Society and Politics in Latin America' 1968, 'Latin America: Underdevelopment or Revolution' 1969 and numerous other books, articles and essays on economic, social and political history.

I N T R O D U C T I O N
Andre Gunder
Frank
was born in Berlin on February 24, 1929; died in 2005
(Luxembourg).
He was economist professor and theorist and one of the
founders of the 'Dependence theory', developed in the sixties.
In his
more recent work he focussed his attention on the analysis of the crisis in
world economy, in particular in relationship with the Third World.
He was
married to
Marta Fuentes
, with whom he wrote several
studies about social movements. They got two sons. She died in Amsterdam in
June 1993.
Andre Gunder Frank
left Germany as a boy when
his parents had to escape the Nazi regime. In 1941 they entered the United
States. He was educated at the
University of Chicago
,
where he received his Ph.D. in Economics in 1957 with a dissertation on Soviet
Agriculture.
From 1957 until 1962 he was lecturer and Assistant Professor
at the
universities of Michigan, Iowa and Wayne State
. In
1962 he went to Latin America and became Associate Professor at the
University of Brasilia
teaching sociological theory.
Then he became Extraordinary Professor at the National School of Economics of
the
National Autonomous University
of Mexico in 1965.
From 1966 until 1968 he was Visiting Professor at the Departments of
Economics and History of the
Sir George Williams
University
, Montreal, Canada.
In 1968 he became Professor at
the Department of Sociology and the Faculty of Economics,
University
of Chile
, Santiago, Chile, where he was involved in the reforms of
the
Salvador Allende
administration. After the military
coup in 1973 he escaped to Europe, where he became Visiting Research Fellow at
the
Max-Planck Institute
in Starnberg, Germany, from 1974
until 1978.
In that year he moved to Norwich, England, where he was
appointed Professor of Development Studies at the School of Development
Studies,
University of East Anglia
.
From 1981 he was
also Professor of Development Economics and Social Sciences at the
University of Amsterdam
, to where he definitely moved in
1983. He retired in 1994. In 1995 he moved to Toronto, Canada.
Besides he
had many other temporary visiting appointments and research appointments in
among others the USA, Brazil, Chile, Mexico, Belgium, Germany and France.
Andre Gunder Frank
has written widely on the economic,
social and political history and contemporary development of the capitalist
world system, the industrially developed countries, and especially of the Third
World and Latin America. His publications include 'Capitalism and
Underdevelopment in Latin America: Historical Studies of Chile and Brazil' in
1967 and 'Development of Underdevelopment: Essays on Imperialism, Society and
Politics in Latin America' in 1968, and numerous other books, articles and
essays, of which many have been translated in several languages. A bibliography
of his publications can be found in inv.no. 134.
In 1995 the
International Institute of Social History
received his
papers. These papers consist of a general series of chronological
correspondence, including correspondence with publishers and personal
correspondence; a series of files made by
Andre Gunder
Frank
, with correspondents from various countries, correspondence
with editors and publishers in several countries; correspondence and programmes
concerning conferences, seminars, forums, symposia and invitations for talks
and lectures; typescripts of his books and articles; reviews, including
critiques by other scientists; interviews with
Andre Gunder
Frank
and articles about him.
Some letters and manuscripts were
only available on floppy disks.
Most
of these texts have
been printed on paper, together with the directories of the floppy disks (see
inv.no. 12).
Books and periodicals that came along with his papers, have
been transferred to the library and photographs, posters, badges and cassettes
with interviews, discussions and speeches have been transferred to the
audiovisual department of the Institute.
