Biography

Born in Worms, Germany 1888, died in Berlin 1961; social democratic politician, economic expert; from 1905 member of the Sozialdemokratische Partei Deutschlands (SPD); staff member of the Leipziger Volkszeitung in 1914; became member of the Unabhängige Sozialdemokratische Partei Deutschlands (USPD) during the First World War, editor of Die Freiheit in November 1918; returned to the SPD in 1922; member of the Reichstag 1920-1933; emigrated to Prague in 1933, member of the `SPD-Executive in banishment' (SOPADE); led the periodical Sozialistische Aktion 1933-1938; one of the leaders of the Neu Beginnen group; supported the formation of a German Volksfront; broke with the SOPADE in 1938; lived in the USA at the end of 1939; member of the Council for a Democratic Germany; returned to Germany in 1949 to work as a financial advisor for the Greater Berlin Council and as a senator for economy and credit.

Arrangement

Die nachstehend verzeichnete Ergänzung zum Nachlaß von Paul Hertz erhielt das IISG 1991 und 1998 von dessen Tochter Hilda Hertz Golden in Amherst, MA., Vereinigte Staaten. Eine Reihe von Fotografien von Paul Hertz aus den Berliner Jahren wurde an das Bildarchiv abgegeben. Ein autobiografisches Manuskript von Hilda Hertz Golden `On becoming an American', daß sich mit ihrer Korrespondenz mit den Eltern vielfältig inhaltlich berührt und gleichzeitig für die Biographie von Paul Hertz von Interesse sein dürfte, wurde in den Katalog der Bibliothek aufgenommen.
