History
The Miners' International Federation (MIF) and the International Federation of Chemical, Energy and General Workers' Unions (ICEF) merged in 1995 to form the International Federation of Chemical, Energy, Mine and General Workers' Unions (ICEM); has its secretariat in Brussels; in 2004 the membership of its affiliated unions surpassed 20 million workers, organised in a wide range of industries: energy, mining and quarrying, chemicals, bioscience, pulp and paper, rubber, diamants, gems, ornaments, jewellery, glass, ceramics, cement and associated industries, environmental services, and service and miscellaneous industries not falling within the scope of other international trade secretariats; aims to become a truly global trade union; represented more than 408 industrial trade unions in 125 countries in 2004; is building up union networks within major multinationals in its sectors and, at the same time, is working to conclude global agreements with companies, covering issues such as trade union rights, equality and health, safety and the environment.
