INTRODUCTION

History

The history of the ICEF goes back as far as 1907 when the International Federation of General Workers (IFF) was founded in Stuttgart. In 1950 its name changed into the International Federation of Industrial Organisations and General Workers Unions and in 1964 into the International Federation of Chemical and General Workers' Unions (ICF) .
A merger with the rival International Federation of Petroleum and Chemical Workers (IFPCW) did not come about and after the IFPCW ceased to exist, the ICF extended its activities to the energy sector, and was renamed in 1976 into International Federation of Chemical, Energy and General Workers' Unions (ICEF) .
The ICEF associated with the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU) and became one of the largest International Trade Secretariats (ITS) .
In 1984 the membership of the affiliated unions surpassed six million workers. They were represented within the ICEF by separate sections for energy, chemicals, rubber, glass, ceramics, paper, cement and many other industries. The ICEF aims to coordinate the strategy and activities of affiliated unions in different countries. It tries to counterbalance the power of multinational companies, the importance of which was especially stressed by its general secretary Charles Levinson . The ICEF is concerned with labour conditions, health and safety, industrial democracy and many other subjects and provides information on such subjects and supports efforts of trade union organisation in non-democratic countries.

Archives

The archives of the ICEF have been acquired by the International Institute of Social History (IISH) in 1995 . A small part of 1.6 m., consisting of older material, had already been acquired earlier.
In the near future the most recent part of the archives (1986-1995) will be transferred to the IISH as well. That part of the archives will end with the merger of the ICEF with the Miners' International Federation (MIF).
The archives were acquired by the IISH in a chaotic state and therefore it became the main task to make divisions and subdivisions and to number the boxes. The arrangement of the archives in this list will be temporal. It was a first attempt to make the ICEF archives accessible. A final arrangement will take place after the supplementary documents have been received too. Those who consult the archives should be aware that the (preliminary) arrangement is not always systematical. For example, the World Councils (for multinational companies) have been classified under the heading of 'conferences, meetings and seminars', whereas a separate heading would have been preferable.
The arranged part of the ICEF archives consist of 63.5 m. of boxes, 8 m. of large boxes and 1.7 m. in portfolios, 73.2 m. in total.
Superscriptions on the boxes have been used for the description of the first 63.5 m.
The portfolios, which contain earlier received documents, have been classified as miscellaneous documents (together with other 'various' documents) and have been numbered subsequently. The large boxes contain not yet arranged documents. They have been described as unarranged documents at the end of this list.
