History
Founded in Paris in 1946; a socialist but non-aligned organization, successor of the prewar Socialist Youth International (SYI/SJI); one of the three fraternal organizations of the Socialist International (SI); members were youth organizations of social democratic parties and some leftist student organizations; acted as a counterpart to the communist controlled World Federation of Democratic Youth (WFDY) in Budapest and the International Union of Students (IUS) in Prague; convinced of the right of peoples to self-determination it supported liberation struggles in various countries; also involved in agitation for peace and disarmament, and in active solidarity work; in the 1950s the position of the non-European affiliates became more prominent; in the 1970s and 1980s contacts between the IUSY and the WFDY were established and gradually intensified with disarmament as a common goal; from 1954 its seat has been in Vienna.
