INTRODUCTION

Biography

Michel Kamel was born in the oasis, al-Fayyum, south of Cairo, in a middle class Coptic family on 12 September 1925. He joined Iskra (al-Sharara), one of the founding communist organizations of the second wave of the Egyptian communism movement after the Second World War, while studying medicine at Cairo University. He was arrested for the first time in 1951 and imprisoned until 1954. After his release, he returned to the university to study dental college, only to be dismissed again by Nasser's government after two years. Remarkably, he escaped the campaign of President Nasser's government against the communists in 1959 and worked as a journalist until the voluntary disbanding of the Egyptian Communist Party in 1964. In 1965 he joined al- Ahram daily as editor of the opinion page and then established al-Tali'a (the Vanguard), together with Lutfi al-Kholi, and continued as its managing editor for five years.

Despite the fact that he supported the decision to disband the party, he was one of the few who revised this decision in the late sixties and initiated the Marxist groups, which united and reestablished the Egyptian Communist Party in 1975. In that year Michel Kamel was elected as member of the Central Committee and Politburo of the Egyptian Communist Party and sent abroad to Lebanon, where he started the Foreign Section of the party and acquired the recognition of international communism to his newly formed party.

During his stay in Beirut, from 1972 to 1977, he played a key role in the exiled opposition movement against President Sadat, building a strong political relationship between the Egyptian Communist Party and the Arab and the Palestinian communist and progressive movements which were then very well established in Beirut. Michel Kamel's life in this period reflects to a great extent the ideological and political differences and disputes which erupted in the rank and file of the party after the assassination of President Sadat in October 1981. Supported by the famous communist lawyers, Ahmed Nabil al-Hilali and Yusuf Darwish, Michel Kamel represented the hard line within the party against what they condemned as the rightist faction within the leadership. At one point, the trio established a parallel organization within the party named al-Tayyar al-Thawri (The Revolutionary Current) to spread their ideas. Effectively utilizing al- Yassar al-Arabi, the magazine Michel Kamel established in Paris in 1977, and his extensive network of relations, both nationally and internationally, he pursued a nevigorous ideological and political campaign against what he considered an attempt to corrupt the Egyptian communist party by al-Tagammuc Party, the legal left party, which participated in official elections, and which he believed compromised the independent ideological and political views of the party by its lenient stance towards the government.

Amazingly, the three leaders managed to remain members of the leadership of the party through more than six years of fierce internal disputes and conflicts until they defected to form The People's Socialist Party (Hisbul-Sha'b al-Ishtiraki) in 1989 as the true Marxist Leninist working class party. Michel Kamel died in Paris on 3 December 1993.

The collection

The collections sheds a broad light on the ideological and political trends and attitudes of the third wave of Egyptian communism during an important phase in the Egyptian history. The signing of the Camp David Peace Agreement with Israel, the assassination of President Sadat and the legalization of oppositional political parties in Egypt, which radically altered the politics of Egypt and the Middle East, characterized this phase.

As Michel Kamel spent the last twenty years of his life abroad, the collection reflects as well the political and ideological atmosphere of the more radical Arab communist movement between 1972 and 1993. The extensive correspondence between Michel Kamel and the Central Committee of the Egyptian Communist Party on the one hand and the leaders of the Revolutionary Current on the other, furthermore gives a unique insight into the political and organizational issues of Egyptian communism in the 1980s.

The collection also contains a considerable amount of documents on al-Yassar al Arabi Magazine, which was a very influential publication among thousands of exiled Egyptian and Arab communists in this period. Foreign relations of the Egyptian Communist Party with other communist parties and international labour and youth organizations are also extensively ftlinecovered by the collection.

Mr. Nabil Gronfoli, a life long friend and comrade of Michel Kamel, donated the collection to the IISH.

A small and yet important collection on Michel Kamel, gathered after his death, has been added to the list. Mr. Farid Kamel, the younger brother of Michel Kamel, a well-known journalist and painter who lives in Rome, donated this collection to the institute.

Remarks

The extensive use of code names made it quite difficult to identify many individuals, organizations and locations. The only three code names that could be positively deciphered are Naqib for Michel Kamel. He also used the code name Khalil in some of his correspondence with the Revolutionary Current group. Other code names that could be traced are: Ahmed, for Nabil al-Hilali, and Hisham for Yusuf Darwish. It seems that Dinshway, the name of an Egyptian village where the British army committed a massacre in 1905, was the code name of the Foreign Section. Other code names are Mohammed Farid for the Soviet Union section, Ibn Rushd for East Germany, Tahtawi for the Middle East section (Syria and Lebanon), and Umm Saber for the Paris Section. Many other codes remain to be deciphered.

The documents were as far as possible sorted and arranged in both thematic and chronological order in order to present a coherent collection. Many undated documents were arranged approximately to the closest date or order. All the documents are in Arabic unless otherwise stated.
