Born in Seedorf 1886, died in Meilen, Switzerland 1957; social democratic politician; active in the Zimmerwald Movement; chairman of the city council of Zurich 1916-1919, 1920-1935, of the Kantonalrat of Zurich 1916-1935, member of the Nationalrat 1919-1943; the first socialist chosen into the Bundesrat; chairman of the financial and customs department 1943-1951; editor of Demokrat Lucern 1912-1913, of the social democratic party organ Volksstimme St. Gall 1914-1915, and of Volksrecht Zurich 1915-1935; one of the founders and editor of Rote Revue 1921-1941.
