Biography
Martin Emanuel Philippson; born in Magdeburg, Prussia 1846, died in Berlin 1916; historian; studied in Bonn, Berlin and, 1867-1868, in Paris; wrote on German, French and Jewish history and was a professor at Brussels 1879-1891; back in Germany, he was active in various Jewish social and cultural organisations and served as a president of the Deutsch-Israelitischer Gemeindebund 1896-1912; in the German-French-War of 1870-1871 Philippson took part as a volonteer with the Berlin Fusilier Guards Regiment.
