INLEIDING

During the Israeli occupation of the West Bank, Palestinian trade unions and other labour organizations continued to operate according to Jordanian law; the Israeli repression made high demands upon workers, both male and female, upon the workers' wives and subsequently upon trade unions and women's organizations, in particular during the Intifada. One of the main women's organizations was the Ittihad Lijan al-Mar'a al-Filastiniyya al-cAmila (Union of Palestinian Committees of Women Workers, UPCWW). During the period 1983-1990 UPCWW adopted eight different names to avoid Israeli legal restrictions:
a) Lijan al-Mar'a al-cAmila (Committees of Women Workers).
b) Lijan al-Mar'a al-cAmila fi al-Difa' al-Gharbiyya wa Qitca Ghaza (Committees of Women Workers in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip).
c) Lijan al-Mar'a fi al-Manatiq al-Muhtala (Committees of Women in the Occupied Territories)
d) Ittihad Lijan al-Mar'a al-cAmila al-Filastiniyya (Union of Committees of Palestinian Women Workers)
e) Ittihad Lijan al-cAmal al-Nisa'i al-Filastini (Union of Action Committees of Palestinian Women Workers)
f) Ittihad Lijan al-Mar'a al-Filastiniyya fi Dawlat Filastin (Union of Palestinian Women Committees in the State of Palestine).
g) Ittihad Lijan al-cAmal al-Nisa'i fi Dawlat Filastin (Union of Women's Action Committees in the State of Palestine).
h) Ittihad Lijan al-Mar'a al-Filastiniyya al-cAmila fi al-Difa' al-Gharbiyya wa Qitca Ghaza (The Union of Palestinian Women Workers' Committees on the West Bank and Gaza Strip)
