INTRODUCTION
A few years before the fall of Suharto demonstrations, strikes and other forms of action against the regime in Indonesia increased. These demonstrations and strikes were led by several organisations, which started their activities around 1993-1995. Some of these organisations were the Serikat Tani National (STN) (National farmers union); the Solidaritas Mahasiswa Indonesia untuk Demokrasi (SMID) (Solidarity of Indonesian students for democracy); the Pusat Perjuangan Buruh Indonesia (PPBI) (Centre for the workers struggle in Indonesia); the Jaringan Kerja Kesenian Rakyat (JAKKER) (Network of popular arts); the Sarekat Rakyat Indonesia (SRI) (Indonesian popular union); the Solidaritas Perjuangan Rakyat Indonesia untuk Rakyat Maubere (SPRIM) (Solidarity of the Indonesian people for the struggle of the Maubere people).in
In 1994 the Persatuan Rakyat Demokratik (PRD) (Democratic association of the people) was created to coordinate the struggle. This association demanded the dissolution of the package of five political laws of 1985 and of the dwifungsi (double function) of the army.
In 1996 a congress was held in Sleman to implement the radical programmes of the PRD. During this first congress decisions were taken about the programmes, the strategies and the tactics of the struggle. The statutes were settled and the association PRD was converted into the political party Partai Rakyat Demokratik (PRD) . The resolution of the congress was documented in the manifesto of the PRD, which was made public on 22 july 1996.
From then on the PRD stayed active in the struggle for democracy and social justice in Indonesia.
The archives were received by the IISH in 2000. In these archives the following can be found: the manifesto and the statutes of the PRD, correspondence, documents concerning the organisations which led to the foundation of the PRD and documentation on politics, history, union activities, human rights and other subjects.
Books and periodicals were transferred to the library of the IISH. Posters, leaflets and headbands were transferred to the audiovisual section of the IISH.
