Biography
Born in Lemberg (L'viv), Galicia, Austria-Hungary 1898, died in Detroit, USA 1967; activist, scholar; as a youth member of the Ukrainian socialist Drahomanov Circles; edited with Roman Turiansky the journal Klyči 1917; founder of the International Revolutionary Social Democracy (IRSD); studied law in Prague; member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Eastern Galicia, representing its emigré organization 1921-1924; leading publicist of the Vasylkivtsi faction of the Ukrainian Communists; Vienna-correspondent of the Marx-Engels Institute in Moscow 1926-1931; emigrated in 1934 to L'viv, worked at the university; published the Trotskyist periodical Žittja i slovo 1934-1938; arrested by the GESTAPO in 1942, survived concentration camps; emigrated to the USA in 1947; worked as independent scholar; his many publications concentrating on Austrian social history and the works of Marx, include `Zur Entstehungsgeschichte des Marxschen "Kapital"' 1969.
