Biography
Born in Tarogong near Garut, Java, Dutch East Indies (Indonesia) 1915, died in Amsterdam (the Netherlands) 1996; trade union leader and author; active in the nationalist youth organization Indonesia Muda and subsequently in the Gerakan Rakyat Indonesia (Gerindo, Movement of the Indonesian People) and the emerging cooperative movement; during the Japanese occupation engaged in the relief of the families of the `romusas', compelled to forced labour by the Japanese; involved in the preparation of the Indonesian independence proclamation in 1945; member of the Komite Nasional Indonesia Pusat, the provisional Indonesian parliament in Yogyakarta; one of the founders of the the trade union of plantation workers Sarekat Buruh Perkebunan Republik Indonesia (Sarbupri) in 1947 and its secretary-general until 1965; being in China he escaped the slaughter of communists and suspects of communism after the coup d'état by general Suharto in 1965; moved to the Netherlands in 1978.
