Full name: Valerian Nikolaevič Smirnov; pseudonyms: Idel'son, Noël; born in Moscow 1849, died in Berne 1900; studied medicine; left Russia 1871; secretary to the Russian library in Zurich; closest assistant to Petr Lavrov in editing Vpered! 1873-1877; correspondent to Russian and other medical journals; active in the peace movement; raised money for Henri Dunant 1895.
