History
Founded under the name Internationale Verbindung sozialistischer Jugendorganisationen in 1907; headquartered in Vienna; its first secretaries were Hendrik de Man and from 1908 to 1915 Robert Danneberg; stressed the struggle against militarism; split during the First World War in consequence of the foundation of the International Youth Bureau in Berne in 1915 under Willi Münzenberg, which had close relations with the socialist antiwar opposition organizing itself at the Zimmerwald and Kienthal conferences; in 1921 two new organizations were founded: the Internationale Gemeinschaft der Sozialistischen Jugendorganisationen under the auspices of the International Working Union of Socialist Parties (IWUSP), with Karl Heinz as its secretary, and the Arbeiter-Jugend-Internationale under the auspices of the remnants of the Second International, with Erich Ollenhauer as its secretary; these two merged in 1923 as the Sozialistische Jugend-Internationale at the International Socialist Conference in Hamburg, together with the foundation of the Labour and Socialist International (LSI/SAI); secretary was Erich Ollenhauer; its seat was Berlin 1923-1933, Prague 1933-1938 and Paris 1938-1940; political decisions were left to the LSI/SAI; involved in a bitter fight against fascism in the 1930s; the Second World War terminated most of its activities.
