INTRODUCTION
Valerian N.
Smirnov
was born in Moscow, where he studied medicine. After his
exclusion from Moscow University he went in 1871 to Zurich, Switzerland, and
became actively involved in the colony around the Russian library. He was the
closest assistant to
Petr L. Lavrov
in editing
Vpered
! 1873-1877. Pseudonyms of him were:
Idel'son, Noël . He was correspondent to Russian and other medical journals. In later life Smirnov was active in the peace movement. He raised money for Henri Dunant in 1895. He died in Berne in 1900. Rozalija Ch. Idel'son was born in Vilnius, Lithuania, in 1848. She studied medicine in Zurich 1871-1873 and was closely connected with the Russian library and Vpered !. In Zurich she met Smirnov , who became her husband. In the early eighties she returned to Russia. She died in St. Petersburg in 1917.
The papers
The
IISH
acquired the papers in 1936 from
N.N. Kolačevskaja
and
V.V.
Kolačevskij
,
Smirnov
's (second) wife and son.
They also handed over a list of the papers, compiled by Kolačevskaja (inv.no.
195). The Institute undertook at that time to publish material from the
Smirnov
papers, and
B.I. Nicolaevsky
,
director of the IISH Paris branch,
B. Sapir
,
E.N. Potresova
,
E.A. Landyševa
and
others, undertook the typing out of many original letters from the papers,
using useful information, provided by Kolačevskaja. Publication of the
documents, however, was interrupted by the Second World War. During the war a
part of the papers disappeared; in particular most of inv.nos. A 1-A 6 of
Kolačevskaja's list (inv.no. 195).
Some of the lost documents turned up
in Russia (GA RF, Moscow). Others have been brought back to the IISH from
Washington. As a result you may find e.g. in inv.nos. 206-210 typescripts (ts.)
copies, of which the originals are not in the papers.
Of the documents,
dating from the seventies and the early eighties, many passed into
Smirnov
's hands from
Rozalija Ch.
Idel'son
and many a letter was written to them both. In 1965
Sapir
resumed the publishing of documents from the papers,
resulting in
Vpered
! 1873-1877 vols. I and II.
All
photographs have been transferred to the IISH Audiovisual Department. The
present metrage (4.35 meters) differs from the one given in the `Guide to the
International Archives and Collections'(1989). This is due to packing the
documents in boxes rather than in the portfolios used previously.
