Biography
Ferdinand Lassalle: born in Breslau, Prussia 1825, died in Geneva 1864; pioneer of the German social democratic movement; studied philosophy and philology; went to Paris in 1845; defended countess Sophie von Hatzfeldt against her ex-husband in the period 1846-1854; contributed to Marx's Neue Rheinische Zeitung; took part in the Revolution of 1848; engaged in the reviving labour movement in 1862 and wrote for the Leipzig congress committee (see ADAV-Hatzfeldt) his `Offenes Antwortschreiben' in 1863, which became the political program of the ADAV, founded in consequence with Lassalle as president; a duel over of a love affair ended his life.
