Biography
Becker, Johann Philipp. Born in Frankenthal, Pfalz 1809, died in Geneva 1886; broom maker, later cigar manufacturer and journalist; fled for political reasons to Switzerland in 1838; became a Swiss citizen and participated in the Sonderbund war; was in command of a unit of a revolutionary German army in Southern Germany 1848-1849; member of the Allgemeine Deutsche Arbeiterverein (ADAV) from 1863; participated in the founding of the International Working Men's Association (IWMA) in 1864 and became head of the section for the German speaking countries; one of the founders of the German Sozialdemokratische Arbeiterpartei (SDAP) in 1869; editor of Der Vorbote 1866-1871 and of Le Précurseur 1877-1882.

A first inventory -made in the 1960s- has been updated and edited by Ursula Balzer in 2008; a number of documents which were overlooked originally have been included in it (see inv. nos. add. 1-65) and the packaging has been renewed.
