History

Founded in Prague 1946 as a world wide nonpartisan association of National Unions of Students (NUSes); aimed to foster international understanding and lasting peace the IUS supported contemporary efforts to continue the anti-Hitler war coalition in peacetime; with its secretariat in Prague the IUS was strongly influenced by communists in key positions from the beginning; left by most Western member unions after the communist take-over in Czechoslovakia 1948 (see International Student Conference), became a communist controlled front organization; from 1956 noncommunist NUSes from the Third World (Latin America especially) got some influence on IUS policy; in 1968 IUS strongly protested when the host country was invaded by its socialist allies; periodicals: World Student News and News Service.

Inventory made by J.R. van der Leeuw in 1970

INTRODUCTION

In this collection documents from different sources have been brought together. Uncertainty about the origin of many documents - there are numerous photo- and xerox copies among them - concerning the International Union of Students made the reconstruction of the files in their original order an impossibility. The main part of the documents were found in the papers of the International Student Conference (Co- ordinating Secretariat), the western opponent of the IUS, that ceased its work at the end of March 1969 and transferred its archives and library to the International Institute of Social History. Many of these documents were sent to the ISC by affiliated organisations, e.g. the NUS, the NFCUS, the SUS, the g1043 SFSlain , and the Nederlandse Studentenraad. The file from the NUS is by far the most important one, giving data on the origins and early history of the IUS (to be found in the part with the title '(British) National Union of Students (of England, Wales and Northern Ireland) 1942-1962').

There are, however, also documents from other sources in this collection: documents sent directly by the IUS to the IISH, documents collected by the Arberarrörelsens Arkiv at Stockholm, etc.

Periodicals, printed reports, booklets and pamphlets published by the IUS as well as literature about this Union can be found in the library of the IISH; the audiovisual department of the IISH contains a number of photos and posters.
