INTRODUCTION
The International Bookbinders' Union was founded by the members of the First International Bookbinders' Conference at Nürnberg in 1907; its activities came to an end the Eleventh International Bookbinders' Conference at Stockholm in 1949. This Conference decided to merge with the International Typographers' Secretariat and the International Federation of Lithographers into the International Graphical Federation , in which the Bookbinders constitute one of the three Trade Groups.
The secretariat of the Union was situated in Berlin from 1907 to 1920, with Emil Kloth as its first Secretary from 1907 to 1919 and Eugen Haueisen an acting secretary 1919-1920. Bern was its second seat (1920-1935), with Heinrich Hochstrasser as Secretary. Its last Secretary was Kristian Eriksen at Kobenhavn (1935-1949).
From the Berlin period only a very small amount of documents have been preserved (nrs 1 and 12), more is left from the later years, especially from the terms of office of Eriksen, although the archive is in no way complete. Most of the papers were granted to the Institute by the Dansk Bogbinder og Kartonnagearbejder Forbund ; some documents were given by the Arbetarrörelsens Arkiv at Stockholm, the International Graphical Federation at Bern and the Algemene Nederlandse Grafische Bond at Amsterdam; some others were collected by the Institute itself.
In the library of the Institute almost complete sets of the Bulletin and the printed rules, reports, minutes etc. of the Union can be found. Its history was written at its 25th anniversary: "Réproduction commune et abrégée de l'histoire de la Fédération International des Relieurs et des Fédération collaborantes ...", Bern, 1932 and afterwards by Corneel Mertens : "L'Internationale des Relieurs", Brussel, [1951].
Some documents of the Scandinavian Secretariat and the Danish Bookbinders' Union - nearly all of it international correspondence of Kristian Eriksen - were added to this archive as annexes.
