Born

INTRODUCTION
José Peirats Valls was born
March 15, 1908 in the village of Vall d'Uxo, in the province of Castellon,
Spain. He died August 20, 1989 in Burriana near Vall d'Uxo at the age of 81.
Peirats' family emigrated to Barcelona in search of a better life. He
started working as an apprentice at the age of eight years. He attended school
occasionally until he discovered the Rationalist Ferrer
School where a gifted libertarian teacher awoke in him the desire to
learn. At fourteen, he started working as a brickmaker's apprentice and at that
time, he joined the Confederación Nacional de Trabajadores
(CNT).
His meager schooling did not deter him from acquiring
extensive knowledge. An avid reader and a prolific writer, he contributed
articles to the CNT press and became active in the day-to-day social struggle.
During the years of the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) his anarchist
convictions led him to criticize the CNT for entering the government.
From December 1939 to 1947, he travelled to the Dominican Republic, Ecuador,
Panama and Venezuela, working as a farmer, sailor, ice man and photographer. He
attended the Congress of the Spanish Libertarian Movement in France in 1947 as
the Venezuelan delegate and at that time was elected General Secretary of the
Intercontinental CNT in Exile. Peirats was the first such
representative to re-enter Spain clandestinely in order to make contact with
the underground CNT.
In the early 1970s, Peirats suffered health
problems which continued to plague him throughout the rest of his life. Due to
his companion Gracia Ventura he was able to continue to
write and work for many years.
Peirats was particularly noted for his
political and historical writing. He served as editor of Solidaridad
Obrera, Ruta and CNT, and he contributed
to many other anarchist publications. He wrote the three-volume work La
CNT en la revolución española (c. 1951-1953), Breve Storia del
Sindicalism Spagnolo (1962) which appeared in Volonta,
Los anarquistas en la crisis política española (1962), which
appeared in English in 1977 as Anarchists in the Spanish
Revolution, Emma Goldman, anarquista de ambos mundos
(1978), later in 1983 reprinted as Emma Goldman: Una mujer en la
tormenta del siglo and other books and pamphlets.
The papers of
Peirats were received by the IISH in 2001. They mainly consist of a series of
alphabetical correspondence 1946-1989, including correspondence with CNT
sections and other correspondence, typescripts of his memoirs 'Mi paso por la
vida' and 'Recuerdos de un militante libertario', typescripts of articles,
correspondence with editors and other documents, documentation concerning the
CNT, Peirats and other documentation.
