The famous English philosopher Thomas Hobbes (1588-1679) was primarily known for the powerful originality of his political philosophy. According to the Austrian economist Joseph Schumpeter (1883-1950), he can also be viewed as one of the founding spirits of sociology.
It is not surprising then that the Institute has several editions of Hobbes' most important works in its collection. IISH has the Latin edition (probably the third) of De cive from 1647, the first French edition from 1647, as well as the first Dutch edition of Leviathan from 1667 (omitting the later editions in the collection).
The KNAW copy is the first English edition of De cive from 1651: Philosophicall Rudiments concerning Government and Society. Or, a dissertation concerning man in his several habitudes and respects, as the member of a society, first secular, and then sacred. ... (London: Royston, 1651).
