Literature

This is the second largest collection, only smaller than 'History of the Netherlands'. This very heterogeneous collection contains about 4,000 documents, half of which are from before 1800.

A relatively large part of the section on 'Dutch literature' is on loan to the Meertens Institute KNAW.

The part on 'literature of the eighteenth and nineteenth century' (G 471-795) contains works by almost all important Dutch men and women of letters who were active during this period. This section contains many multi-volume collections, brought together under a single call number. Flemish publications are represented as well.
In addition to original works, the section on 'dramatic poetry' (G 796-1148) contains French plays (Racine, Corneille, Molière). Most of the works in this section date from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries; however, Bredero, Vondel, and Hooft are represented here as well.

The section on 'Greek literature' (G 1149-1470) is an interesting collection with seven incunabulae and 32 sixteenth-century editions. In addition to Ancient Greek linguistics, the collection contains important works by or about well-known poets such as Homer, Hesiod, Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides, Pindar, and Xenophon.

The section on 'Latin literature' (G 1471-1747) is an interesting collection with nineteen incunabulae and 23 sixteenth-century editions. This section contains an extensive collection of editions and commentaries in Latin as well as translations in Dutch, French, German, and English, of De Rerum Natura by T. Lucretius Carus (G 1486-1520) and collections of works by Titus Maccius Plautus (G 1523-1530), Marcus Terentius Varro (G 1531-1538), Virgilius (G 1539-1553), Quintus Horatius Flaccus (G 1554-1563), Publius Ovidius Naso (G 1564-1568), Marcus Tullius Cicero (G 1621-1655), Gaius Plinius Secundus (G 1684-1696), and C. Crispi Salustius (G 1711-1716).

The section on 'philology, Latin poets and rhetoricians' (G 1748-1928) contains eight incunabulae and sixteen other sixteenth-century printings (by non-Roman writers).

Although the section on 'literature from other European countries' (G 1929-2215) is not representative, it contains several works of particular interest.

A fair number of works in the section on 'Eastern literature' (G 2216-2475) is from the J. Willmet estate.
