Philosophy

Philosophy is a fairly small collection, and is not representative of this field of study. The following disciplines are represented: history, epistemology, philosophy of science, philosophy of mathematics, and aesthetics. Most works are available in early editions and in the original language. An exception is Immanuel Kant, who is largely represented by later editions in French translation.

The emphasis of this collection is on eighteenth-century rationalism and empiricism: Descartes, Hume, Leibniz, Kant. The Enlightenment is represented by a number of interesting, although lesser known French authors; Maupertuis, Helvetius and Argens. The humanist bias of the collection can be seen from the considerable collection of works by Montaigne and from the absence of dogmatic religious works. This is even more evident by the conspicuous absence of Hegel, the German Idealists and the 'literary' philosophers such as Schopenhauer and Nietzsche.

Dutch philosophy is fairly well represented in the collection, which contains works by most of the important authors in the field. Among these are several works of particular interest such as De inventione dialectica by Rodolphus Agricola and early Boethius translations. Spinoza is notably absent.

Other works on philosophy can be found in the collection on 'Literature' (Greek authors and Latin literature).
