Natuurkunde

Deze deelcollectie bevat naast de fysica ook de geologie (natuurkundige aardrijkskunde) en de meteorologie.

De deelcollectie bevat werken van veel bekende geleerden uit de zeventiende tot en met de negentiende eeuw (R 42-309) . Het is echter geen representatieve verzameling. De meest interessante werken en/of werken van beroemde geleerden worden hier als bijzonder werk gesignaleerd. Vanaf het midden van de negentiende eeuw verschijnt het meeste werk van onderzoekers in tijdschriften en seriewerken.

Het collectiedeel 'natuurkundige aardrijkskunde' (R 310-507) is geen bijzonder interessante verzameling. De studie van de geologie van bepaalde landen is wel goed vertegenwoordigd (bijv. Scandinavië, Aziatisch Rusland, Indonesië, Verenigde Staten).

Ook het collectiedeel 'meteorologie' (R 508-664) is niet bijzonder. Zij bevat werken van meteorologische observatoria uit verschillende landen (voornamelijk uit Europa, India, Indonesië en Amerika). Een aantal (seriële) werken zijn in de jaren 1930 overgedragen aan het KNMI. Werken van Buys Ballot zijn aanwezig, maar niet compleet.

  Informatie over dit werk:Josiah Dwight Whitney's Yosemite Book (1868) is the most spectacular record of the most celebrated scenic valley in the world. The Massachusetts geologist was one of the commissionersappointed to oversee the Yosemite Valley when it was set aside as apark in perpetuity by the government in 1864, as part of aCongressional Act that marked the beginning of the system of national parks. Whitney was also the first state geologistof California, supervising much of the early scientific exploration ofthe Sierra Nevada, from 1860 until the Geological Survey wasdisbanded in 1879. Publication of the results of the Survey waserratic and fragmentary, but fortunately included The Yosemite Book, a splendid quarto gift book with 28 mounted photographs byCarleton E. Watkins (1829-1916), a New York-born artist who was well-known for a series of enormous and stereoscopic imagesof the Yosemite Valley that he produced in 1861. The plates were original photographic prints, which effectively limited the edition: only 250 copies were produced. Watkins' images of Yosemite were instrumental in convincing the U.S. Congress to preserve the Yosemite Valley as "inviolate." They are not so much a documentary record of vanished splendor as a timeless response and the direct precursor of the work of an entire school of environmentalist photographers, including Ansel Adams.
