Physics

In addition to physics, this collection contains geology ('physical geography') and meteorology. Although it also contains works by many of the better known scientists from the seventeenth to the nineteenth centuries (R 42-309), it is not representative of the field. The most interesting works are mentioned in the following overview. From the middle of the nineteenth century onwards most research in this field is no longer published in books, but in periodicals and serials.

The section on 'physical geography' (R 310-507) is not especially interesting, even though the geology of a number of regions and countries such as Scandinavia, the Asiatic part of Russia, Indonesia, and the United States of America is fairly well represented.

The collection part 'meteorology' (R 508-664) contains works from meteorological observatoria, mainly situated in Europe, India, Indonesia, and the United States of America. A number of works have been transferred in the 1930s to the KNMI, the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute. The subcollection contains a number of works by Dutch scientist Buys Ballot, but not his complete works.
