New Chinese Posters

Thanks to financial support from the Friends of the IISH, eight rare Chinese posters from the years 1951-1965 were purchased from a Hong Kong collector. For some examples, see the fourth issue of the newsletter of the Friends, On the Waterfront (PDF, 656 Kb).
Recently the Institute was able to add 125 Chinese propaganda posters and prints to its extensive collection. Among these are many rare pieces from the early years of the People's Republic. Subjects include the Korean War, the campaign to 'liberate Taiwan' and the Great Leap Forward. Other posters date from the first stages of the Cultural Revolution, and are stunning in their aggressive symbolism.
Here are a few examples, prior to conservation.
