All were anarchists, except Dolores (jailed for smuggling) and Juliana and Pilar Bañolas (socialists). The latter was caught at the border without papers and carrying a message from cellist Pablo Casals. All except Joaquina, Dolores and Pilar were sentenced to death, but were reprieved.
