'The children are cared for with a view to the future. At school they get practical education; molding their character has priority. Reckless tomboys were successfully taught to stay away from the birds in the woods and not to shoot the fowl or the kidangs [deer]. All children are educated in cleanliness, order, and thrift, and the girls learn practical things like sewing and repairing clothing. They learn in a playful way and experience a great deal of liberty.' (Uit Onze Koloniën p. 736)
