The Collection and How to Search it
The Yiddish collection of the IISH consists of three major material types: printed material, visual material and the Bund archives.
Printed Material
The Bund-archives at the IISH can roughly be divided in four categories. First unique leaflets and appeals from local committees of the Bund in Russia and other documents received by the Bund Foreign Committee in Geneva, the Central Bureau of Bundist Groups Abroad and by the Bund Central Committee in the period 1898-1919.
Secondly from the same period documents concerning various groups in Imperial Russia, including left-wing parties such as the RSDRP and the Polish PPS. Thirdly documents concerning Bundist emigré groups in London, Leeds, Paris, Berlin, Buenos Aires and New York, as well as documentation concerning emigrant organisations such as OSE, ORT and Emigdirekt in the period 1920-1928. Finally documents concerning Jewish political parties in interbellum Poland in the period 1926-1938.
Visual Material
The visual collection has a strong Bundist emphasis. It contains posters, prints and photo's. The poster collection contains Bundist election posters from interbellum Poland; protest posters against anti-semitism and fascism; photo's of Bundist leaders and graphic design like propaganda picture-stamps.
Bund Archive

How to search the Collection
A detailed inventory of the Bund archive is available on the web. The printed and visual material can be found in our Online Public Catalogue (OPC) as special collection yidishkayt. The Online Public Catalogue can be accessed through the quick and easy-to-use Web-interface and through a telnet session for more search options.
Searching the yidishkayt collection through the Web-interface
- Go to Geo-web, our Web-interface
- Choose a language and Login
- Search for: yidishkayt in all words
- You will than see a list of ALL items in the yidishkayt collection
- To limit the number of results, choose Limits in the Search Controls Menu
- Enter a Date limit and/or a Material type limit, your results will be authomatically sorted on date
- To sort your results on either Author, Title or Date choose Sort Results in the Search Controls Menu
- To sort your results in Advanced Keyword Search choose Advanced in the Search Controls Menu
- By Choosing Limits in the Search Controls Menu you can further limit your list of results
- To see the detailed desciption of the listed items choose Full Record
It is of course also possible to search the whole IISH collection on Yiddish material by entering a keyword at the above mentioned point 3.
Some material from the Bund that is NOT published in Yiddish is listed as special collection Bund. This special collection as a whole can only be searched in the OPC through the telnet session. Geoweb only allows keyword searching on separate items.
Searching the yidishkayt collection in the OPC through a telnet session
- On the Look for the first word in ... go to Special collections
- Type yidishkayt. You will find more than 600 items.
- Choose the number before Yidishkayt. You now have a list of all the items in the collection, which contains books, periodicals and visual documents.
- To limit the number of results, choose modify search.
- Then : change limits.
- Choose the limitation you want. For example : you want to see all the periodicals in this collection: 'enter' until you reach With material type.
- Here the computer will show you a list of possibilities. Type as.
- 'Enter' until you are back at the options line.
- Then Proceed.
- Forward until all (more than 600) listed titles have been tested and the number of titles 'after limits' is shown.
- You now have a list of all the periodicals in the Yidishkayt collection.
- You can sort this list on title/author.
If you choose for a list of all the books / brochures you can also sort this list on author/title.
N.B. The sorted list will start with titles without author followed by authors on alphabetical order.
For books or visual documents you follow the same procedure.
